Born into a family that has studied and taught martial arts since the 1950's, Jay began his training at an early age. By the age of 22 he had already opened up his first jiu-jitsu & self-defense club on has own in Danville, Illinois. From 1993-1999 he had taught more than 200 registered students under his own club name.

Growing up in Danville Shihan Sandlin was involved in many local activities to help promote the martial arts. He has performed and put on demonstrations to raise money at benefits. He assisted his father in teaching martial arts and self defense at local church and youth groups. In the early 1990's he also assisted his father in training the local Guardian Angels outfit, as well as other neighborhood protection groups,  in street self defense and immobilization techniques. He has assisted his father in weapons training to security groups in the use of stun guns, batons, PR22's and PR24's. In the mid 1990's Shihan Sandlin was one of the organizers who put together the first 2 mixed martial arts tournaments in Danville, Illinois. They were titled "Battle of the Ring Warriors" and "Extreme Combat".

Shihan Sandlin is a certified instructor in "Self-Defense", "Rape Awareness and Prevention", "Children's Awareness and Prevention", Also "Psychology of Preparedness". In addition he has a masters degree in "Reality Combat and Martial Arts Studies".

In 2002 Shihan Sandlin opened his martial arts organization to the public the "United States Jiu Jitsu Alliance". Before that time it was only for his personal students to join into. The U.S.J.J.A. is designed to unify the martial arts community under one brotherhood or alliance. It is a non profitable organization with proceeds going toward the promotion of the alliance. The organization offers membership and recognition open to all styles not just jiu-jitsu systems.

In 2004 Shihan Sandlin created the “Global Black Belt Society”. This is an organization with the primary function of creating a Black Belt rank registry open to all styles of the Martial Arts. This is a free offering that is open to anyone who wishes to have their rank registered.

Shihan Sandlin wrote his first book in 2004  "Complete Self Defense: A Comprehensive Look at Personal Safety, Security and Awareness". The book is more than a Self Defense book. It is a complete guide to everyday safety and security. Providing the reader with some of the most valuable information around. The book is just the next step in Shihan Sandlin's quest to promote Self-Defense and the Martial-Arts to the world.

Shihan Sandlin has competed in a countless numbers of martial arts tournaments and events. In his very first sparring tournament he finished in 3rd place. This was the Illinois State Karate Championships, there were over 500 competitors and 25 competitors in his division alone. He would have placed higher if not for striking too hard and losing points (a lesson learned very quickly: control your techniques). Since that tournament he has competed in every type of event from light contact, full contact, continuous fighting, team sparring, kickboxing, boxing, judo, jiu-jitsu, submission fighting, limited rules and no holds barred. He has also performed empty hand and weapons forms. In the 1990's he began breaking material and soon made quite a name for himself in the Illinois and Indiana area for his uncanny ability and creativity in breaking material with a wide variety of techniques. In 1998 he won the middleweight division at "Rage In The Cage" a limited rules martial arts event.

            Shihan Sandlin has studies under his father first and foremost. However he has also trained and studied with other martial artist, fighters and instructors throughout his career. Including but not limited to practitioners of Tae Kwon Do, Kenpo, Kung Fu, Kickboxers, boxers, toughman fighters, wrestlers, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stylist, Aikido, Judo, and many others. He has also gained valuable knowledge from clinics, workshops and seminars. Shihan Sandlin has been awarded cross promotion and honarary rank in othe systems due to his ability and knowledge of the martial arts.
